Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

Ganzhou Zhanggong District Social Welfare Institute

Photos of the Ganzhou Orphanage

This orphanage is in the city of Ganzhou, in southwestern Jiangxi, a seventeen hour bus ride away. It is reported as being an extremely poor area. A group received babies from this orphanage in March 1996. They seemed well cared for but almost all were undernourished or malnourished (one seriously so), the long bus ride the babies had surely didn't help. Because it is so far away this group had no chance to visit the orphanage or the city.

From a family who traveled December 1996: "Our daughter is doing wonderfully--she's strong and happy with a sweet disposition and adventuresome spirit. She's almost eleven months old and looks as though she'll be walking soon. She was clearly well cared for in China. The orphanage director brought her to us in Nanchang---a 10 hour train ride!" (EB)

And in April 1997: We adopted a daughter in Nanchang, who was from the Ganzhou Welfare Home in Ganzhou City. We were part of a group, in which six children were adopted, ages 9 months to 25 months. All the children were healthy and happy. Even the two year old, who was the favorite of the orphanage, was a joy from day one. Some of the children in our group were fostered out, ours was not and she couldn't even hold her head up when we got her. Now one month later, she sits unassisted fairly well, talks up a storm including Mamma, Daddy, Doggy and e i, e i (as in Old McDonald had a farm) rolls from tummy to back. Those children who were in foster care were developmentally very well on target and eating table food. Our daughter was bottle fed only, with 6 teeth in her mouth, but quickly took to table food. None of the children were malnourished or undernourished. We also did not have the opportunity to visit the orphanage or city.

Traveling January 1997: "My daughter was obviously well cared for. She attached to me quickly and strongly, and is active, bright and happy. She was not in foster care in China, and was 12.5 months old when I met her." (JW)
