Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

Hengfeng Social Welfare Institute

Photos of the Orphanage from January 16, 2002

Heng Feng is in the northeastern part of the province.  A family received a referral from this orphanage in October 1999 and traveled for their adoption in January 2000.  This was the first family I'd heard of adopting from this orphanage.  Soon after I heard from another family that ended up traveling the week before this first family and there have been a several referrals since.

We are providing some assistance to the Hengfeng Oprhanage through Altrusa/Amity (see http://www.altrusa.ws).  When Dr. Hong, one of the Amity staff, visited Hengfeng in May 2002 she reported this about the orphanage:  "On my way from Shangrao to Yingtan, I visited Hengfeng orphanage incidentally. We sponsored 4 students in this orphanage. I visited two of them. They are Liao Zhi Jun and Yuan Qin. Liao Zhi Jun, female, studies in Jiangxi Qian Shan Health School. She will graduate in the fall of 2002. She hopes that she could pass the entrance examination and go to Medical University for further study. If not, then she prefers to work in orphanage's clinic. The director told me that the new building for children is built, and they will move in it in late June. But at present, Child Division and Old People's Division are in the same building. There are altogether 70 children in this orphanage, 30 of them live in the institution, and the others live in foster homes. They have around 10 disabled children, 2 of which are CP children, 4 have hepatitis B, and 4 have cleft lip and/or cleft palate. 4-5 infants share a room being taken care by one nurse. They all are healthy. From January to June of 2002, 30 children were adopted by overseas' families. And most of them are from the States. The orphanage wish they could have more cooperation with Amity in the future."  Since then we have increased our support to the Hengfeng orphanage and are also sponsoring some children in foster care.

2004-09 - My husband and I adopted our daughter from the HengFeng SWI on January 7, 2003.  She was born April 3, 2002.  She was and is very healthy and developmentally on target in all areas.  The only puzzling item that our group of 5 families encountered is that all the girls had an elevated level of lead detected when having their first exam back in the States.  It doesn't seem to have affected any of them.

Cen Qi was her name upon referral.  We have named her Anna - she is terrific.

We did visit the HengFeng SWI.  The orphanage was in a separate building from the retirement home.  We were happily surprised to find the building clean and cheerful.  The director held a ceremony for us and presented all five girls with tiny silver bracelets.  All the former caretakers were very emotional during the visit and had to touch and talk to all the babies.  (Most of the caretakers were crying)  The girls had only been away from them for a few days at that point.

We only saw the first floor of the orphanage.  There was a main, large play area.  On each side of the play area was a nursery with 4 cribs and a cot for a caretaker.  I was originally against going to the Heng Feng SWI, afraid of what I might see - but I was so relieved to see the building and the people caring for my daughter.  We were told that she had been in foster care for all but the last month before we adopted her.  I never received proof or absolute confirmation of that.
