Adoption in China
By Peggy Gurrad

Nancheng Welfare Institute

2004-09 - We adopted a little girl name Gu Wen from the Nancheng Welfare Institute in Jiangxi province.  She is born Sept. 14 2001, and was adopted in Jan. 2003.  In our group from Montreal, Quebec, 3 other little girls also come from Nancheng.  We did not visit the orphanage, we received Gu Wen in Nanchang.

2004-09 - We heard that the orphanage just has been approved for foreign adoption again. We were two families that got children from this orphanage, and they were in very good condition. Both were 1 1/2 years old when adopted and they could walk, talk and eat with spoon. The director was very kind to answer all our questions and when we were in Beijing, we got nine pictures from the orphanage. They said that there were 23 children living there at the moment and that there were 9 nurses who worked there. (CK)

2004-08 - My husband and I adopted our daughter from the Public Welfare Institution of Nancheng in August of 2003. It is my understanding that this is a smaller orphanage. Our daughter was 8 months old at the time we received her and aside from a throat infection she was very healthy. We adopted with a group from Canada and all nine babies from this institute were fairly healthy and seemed to have been very well cared for. Thanks. (TD)

Four or five families adopted from this orphanage in October 1999 and I haven't heard from any additional families since.  Apparently this is a small orphanage and it must not do international adoptions very often.  On the map it appears to be a smaller town and is about 130-140 km south and somewhat east of Nanchang.

From one of the moms adopting October 1999:  Our daughter almost three now (July 2001) and doing wonderfully. She is my shining star.  We did not visit the orphanage but received her in Nanchang. She was very small for her age, covered with bug bites, and had many scars supposedly from sitting on the potty chair.  She also had high levels of lead in her blood when she first came home. She, however, has blossomed, and like her three other orphanage mates, is on-target or even advanced developmentally. (BS)

If you or anyone you know has adopted from this orphanage I'd love to hear from you.
